-------------------------------------------

Barnaskoli Vestmannaeyja is a school for children from the age of 6 to 16, with 450 pupils.

36 teachers work at the school with 15 other employees.

Barnaskoli Vestmannaeyja is the oldest school in Vestman- islands, assumed to have been founded in 1882. The first childrens school in Iceland was founded in Vestman- islands in 1745 and was open for 10 years, or until it was closed because of lack in fundings.

The school stands by Skólavegur and its oldest part dates back to 1917. Since then it has been expanded 4 times and is still too small for all the pupils to be studying at once.

Physical Education is tought at the local Sports Hall.

Every fall we make study progress plans for all classes. Twice every winter we issue reports on all pupils.

The teachers' counsil assists in the school's administration.

The pupils' protection counsil meets every fortnight.

Parent cooperation is considerable both through, formal meetings and with letters sent to parents with information about their childrens attendance and progress. Every teacher has a fixed hour each week for consultation.

The pupils' counsil organises their social events under the administration of one of the teachers.

The school is allowed a certain number of classes for pupils with special needs.

There is a special department for handicapped children at the school and a teacher for speech impediments.

The Health Care at the school works in accordance with laws on health care and is run by Vestman-islands Health Care Center.

A continuous schoolday became a reality for us in the fall of 1995, and at the same time the schools cleaning was reorganized. Now every pupil can have lunch at school.

The community pays teachers to assist pupils with homework at school. This has been well recieved by parents and pupils.

There's a good library at the school and Icelands first school library was founded here.
